ARTIST🎨 |
Alex Lim (b.2005) is the popular teen artist behind the moniker, The Unskilled Boy. He's "unskilled" because painting and drawing are what he does best, he jests. Alex is autistic and the visual art student has been developing his love for abstract (geo) art and pop-art over the years, working with acrylic, ink, oil pastels, watercolour, impasto, and pencils on canvas and paper.
He learned various classical techniques from art teachers in Singapore and Germany (online). Alex uses unconventional applications such as smearing to add another dimension to his work. His paintings of nature and everyday things focus on the source of inspiration where he finds beauty in the details, sometimes humously. |

Alex is part of !MPACT – an initiative by Singapore's National Youth Council to spotlight young people who have made an impact in their communities. He has since presented his works in three exhibitions (solo & group): I Am Alex (2021); Home @ Studio Neon Gallery (2022); and Abstract Landscape @ St. Anthony's Secondary School. In 2021, 50% of the exhibition earnings was donated to the Cat Welfare Society.
The talented teen has also produced four nature (animal) series on canvas, each comprising up to 12 paintings – Animal Farm; Tiger; Angry Ants (created by The Unskilled Boy); and Rabbits In A Garden. Plus, a collection of pencil drawings on paper – and a paper mache figurines series (2023) that would be displayed as installations @ St. Anthony's Secondary School as part of World Autism Awareness Day. |

PAINTINGS FROM THE ❤️
Alex's works are characterised by the bold and vibrant colours alongside detailed patterns underlined by bold brush strokes. His abstract geometric artworks take elements from the real world and are represented in shapes, forms and colours, often detaching the subjects from its true form. His paintings come from a place of honesty and love, straight from the heart. His works have been featured in Arts Republic, Art Equator, Time Out, Expat Choice Asia, Youthopia, A-List, and The Pride. Using only high-quality Golden, Liquitex & Pebeo paints, custom wood frames, and anti-UV glass frames. Packaging of artworks is eco-friendly, reusable or recyclable. |
